Vietnam is already home to a selection of spectacular train journeys, but be prepared to add another to your list this year. From 1 September, a new tourist train will run between the imperial capital of Hue and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, one of Vietnam's most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Officially named the "Journey of Wonders World Heritage," the roughly 190-kilometre route passes through Quang Tri Province with stops at Dong Ha, My Trach, Dong Hoi and Tho Loc, where passengers disembark for the final stretch to Phong Nha itself.

On board, the journey is set to be just as magical as the surrounding landscapes. Five of the eight carriages have 360-degree rotating seats, while a VIP carriage seats 24 in a more intimate setting. There's also a service car with a screening room for downtime between stops, live cultural performances and regional dishes from Hue and Quang Tri served on board. Expected jaw-dropping views, immersive storytelling and curated meals - it’s definitely one not to miss.

Each stop along the route has its own focus: Hue for imperial heritage, My Trach for fascinating historical figures, Dong Hoi for its lush coastline and Tho Loc as the gateway to Phong Nha's extraordinary cave systems and jungle.

The outbound service is set to depart Hue at 7:15am, arriving at Tho Loc at around 11:55am. The return will leave Tho Loc at 1:15pm and return to Hue by 5:25pm, which makes it a comfortable day trip or the beginning of a longer stay in the national park.

For anyone planning a trip through central Vietnam, this is the perfect slow-travel, scenic route to opt for. Whether you’re fresh from a few days exploring Hanoi, heading down south or simply looking for a more in-depth trip, we’d suggest keeping this one bookmarked.
